Three countries, one goal
Kenya
Rural counties
Free primary school, unaffordable secondary school
Kenya made primary education free in 2003 and day secondary education free in 2008. Families still cannot meet the costs that remain at secondary level, and for thousands of girls in rural areas going to school remains a distant dream. Source
We cover the full cost of those remaining years. The return is measurable: each additional year of secondary education increases eventual wages by 15 to 25 percent, and the effect is larger for girls than for boys. Source
Uganda
Karamoja, northern Uganda
The longest journey to a classroom
The Karamajong region of northern Uganda contends with tribal conflict, cattle raids, and entrenched misconceptions about educating girls. Educational infrastructure is severely limited.
Rather than wait for schools to reach these communities, we bring girls to the schools — funding places in Kampala and Entebbe and covering transport and boarding along with every fee. Universal secondary education was introduced nationally, but the pressure it placed on facilities and teaching quality has held outcomes down even as access improved.
Tanzania
Nationwide
Lower fees, same barriers
Tanzania reduced secondary school fees in 2015. The obstacles that actually keep girls at home did not move: insufficient equipment, shortages of mathematics and science teachers, deteriorating buildings, and families unable to cover transport, uniforms, and materials. Source
Girls carry additional risks. More than 37 percent marry before 18, and every year thousands leave school because of adolescent pregnancy. Our scholarships remove the practical barriers the fee reform left standing, so that a place at school becomes a place a girl can actually take up. Source
